Swift Fox Kits Playing, High Plains near Black Mesa
Black Mesa and the surrounding High Plains lie in the far northwestern tip of the panhandle of Oklahoma. It was here that my wife Karen and I spent several mid-June mornings and evenings quietly observing and photographing two families of swift foxes. We witnessed them all romping, pouncing, ambushing, and hunting. We also watched the mothers nurture the kits, that is, when they were not being attacked by them. Now, while the foxes were not affected by the temperature (which was in the low sixties) or by the eternal wind, I, in my flimsy short-sleeved shirt, thought I was going to freeze to death!
